Rep Steve King & Steve Iverson attempt to suppress hispanic vote
Link to story : Attorney General: Spanish Election Forms Legal
Congressman King and State Senator Iverson show their true contempt for democracy and their fellow Americans by attempting to get spanish language ballots removed from polling places. Rarely do such stories cause as much anger in me as this one did. How dare they? As an American, you have the right to vote. Period. If you need a ballot in a language other than english you should get, because to have your vote suppressed is to have democracy betrayed. It's especially galling when it is done by the very representatives of the people of the nation.
Perhaps Rep King has forgotten the oath he took upon taking office?
"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."
Here's a tip, Congressman King: citizens trying to vote are not "enemies, foreign and domestic."
True faith and allegiance to the constitution means that Americans get to vote. End of story.
Being an American is much more than just sharing a language, it is about sharing values, and honoring democracy. People who come to the polls are exhibiting American values of respect to their fellow citizens by working to choose our government - it is the job our our elected representatives to protect the right and ability of every American to exercise their rights at the polls. To do anything less is to undermine the very values that make us Americans.
